Bio Flashcards
Living organisms characteristics
-they reproduce •through sexual reproduction or Asexual reproduction -based on the same genetic code -they grow and develop -they respond to their environment -they strive to maintain internal balance -need materials for energy -they change over time in groups -they are made of cells
Homeostasis
Maintaining an internal balance
Nucleus
Control center, holds DNA
Ribosomes
Creates proteins and enzymes
Small bundles of protein and DNA
Golgi apparatus
Modifies, improves, and redistributes proteins
Endoplasmic Reticulum
Packages materials for transport with and outside of the cell
Smooth ER
Rough ER- has ribosomes on it
Mitochondria
Powerhouse
Creates energy for the cell from the molecule
Converts energy from food into energy for the cell
Chloroplasts
Creates energy rich molecules from energy in the environment(light) not in animal cells
Vacuoles
Storage of water salt and carbohydrates Very large in plants because a plant can’t get its own water, but an animal can
Lysosomes
Destroys and digests cell waste
Only in animal cells
Cytoskeleton
A network of protein fibers that help support/give shape to the cell
Provide a highway to move materials around the cell
Chromatin
DNA bound to protein
Eukaryotic Cells
Larger Nucleus More complex Organelles Humans+Plants+Fungi DNA is enclosed in a nucleus
Prokaryotic
Simpler
Smaller
Bacteria
DNA is not enclosed in the nucleus
Cell membrane
Contained in both prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells
