What does federation mean?
Federation is when the colonies all joined together to form a nation, Australia, with a federal government being led by a Prime Minister.
When did Australia federate?
Australia federated on the 1st January 1901.
Who was the ‘Father of Federation’?
Henry Parkes - he supported and began the major push for federation in Australia. He was the main speaker at Tenterfield and gave the oration to convince people that federation was a good idea.
Why was the Tenterfield Oration so important for Australia’s federation?
It was the first time a direct appeal had been made to the public to support federation. Before this, it had only been politicians and people in power who had participated in these discussions.The messages from the Tenterfield Oration were then shared to many audiences. This rallied (encouraged) support for federation.
What does ‘oration’ mean?
A formal speech usually given at a ceremony.

What was Women’s Suffrage - how was it important for federation?
Womens Suffrage is the right for women to vote and hold a position in Parliament. It was important because the majority of women didn’t have the right to vote prior to federation and the vote only represented half of the population (men).
Why is a constitution important?
It sets out the rules and laws for how a country is run. It is the foundation of our legal system and upholds the human rights of citizens.
What is a referendum?
A general vote by the electorate (the people) on a single political decision. You can only vote ‘Yes’ or ‘No’.
