HaSS T2 Immigration Flashcards
A reason that causes a person to leave their home country is called a ? factor.
Push factor
Explain why people would move to escape war
Because it’s dangerous, there would be a lack of food, jobs would change or disappear, you might have to join the defence force and fight (putting your life in danger). War can also ruin the infrastructure of a country (schools and hospitals could be destroyed along with roads, houses etc) and these can take a long time to rebuild. Sometimes the idea of a new country and new life is very attractive.
Why is education an important pull factor when moving to a new country?
Access to getting a good education means the ability to get a job and make money. That money can then be spent on a home, putting food on the table and being able to live a stable life.
What is political persecution?
Political persecution is when the government (or people in power) don’t like a particular social group in their country and make life difficult for them. It often involves some type of discrimination - e.g. they might only be allowed to live in one area, they might not be able to get certain types of jobs.
Name 3 pull reasons why an immigrant would want to come to Australia
- We have a very good education system (children can be educated and then have better job prospects)
- We have an excellent medical system. We have great hospitals where people have access to care - many other countries do not provide this level of care and it can be very expensive when you do need it.
- We have a democratic government where people get to vote and have a say. There is no political persecution, people are treated well.
- Most Australians have a job and enjoy a great lifestyle! Workers in Australia have good working conditions and get paid fairly. Having a good job allows you to be independent and create a stable lifestyle.
