Moat

Bridge going over the moat, blocking entry, making it hard for attackers to cross moat.

The outer rim of the castle where the portcullis, murder holes and guardrooms are located.
Barbican
Defensive structure protecting the main gate, forcing the attackers to engage with defenders.
Curtain walls
The outer defensive structure which protected the main gate, creating a strong barrier.

Provide vantage points for defenders

Heavy grated doors to block entrance
