Elements, Compounds & Mixtures Flashcards
Physical properties of Metals
- Shiny (Lustrus)
- Solid at room temp (exp Mercury),
- Good conductors of heat & electricity
- Malleable
- Can be stretched into wires (ductile)
Physical properties of non-metals
- Dull (not shiny)
- Don’t conduct heat or electrity
- Brittle
- Solids or gasses at room temp
The ways elements can be arranged
- As single elements
- Mollecules (clusters)
- Lattices
Whats a mollecule?
A cluster of two or more atoms bonded together
Whats a solution?
Mixture of solute and solvent
What is a solute?
The object added in the solvent (ute is solid)
What is a solvent
The liquid where the solute dissolves in (liquid goes through vents)
What is a mixture?
Two or more pure substances mixted together, you cant write a chemical formula
What is an element made from
One type of atom
How to write chemical symbol
- First letter uppercase
- Second letter lowercase
- The atomic number
What is the atomic number
The number of protons in the nucleas. It determines the type of atom and what element it belongs to
The atom arrangement of elements
They don’t bond with eachother or atoms from other elements
The atom arrangement of compounds
Can be molecule or lattice
