Bull run also known as the battle of Manassas was the first battle of the civil war in which union troops marched south to capture south’s Richmond capital but McDowell was stopped by brig. Gen P.G.T. Confederates flanked on the right side pushing union back to Washington resulting in confederate win.

The battle to stop to capture richmond virginia The battle of Antietam happened because Robert E. Lee wanted to push battles north to capture Washington. Told us that confederates could stand up to union and gave Abraham confidence to announce Emancipation Proclamation. Ultimately union won because of emancipation making this a turning point. battles now just fought in south.
