4 types of historical data

  1. Statistics - little prior to 1900, most prior to 1920’s for health/security, stats getting more comprehensive, still major gaps, to much relies on sampling
  2. Personal documents - diaries, letters, go back to earliest travellers, only real source c20th
  3. Mass communication - magazines, newspapers, tv, brochures, guidebooks
  4. Other sources - pre history through archaeology, diplomatic records, archives of travel films
    All historical data has particular problems with bias

  1. Leisure activity that presupposes its opposite
  2. Tourist relationships involve movement and a stay - journey/destination
  3. The journey and stay are out of the ordinary - short term, intention to return home
  4. Places gazed upon are not connected to our work, offer contrasts - gaze on sites of others work
  5. Many do it in modern society - fastest growing industry
  6. Anticipate pleasure - utopian tourists, anticipation of pleasure
  7. We gaze at features separated from our everyday - out of the ordinary because they are someone else’s ordinary
  8. Gaze constructed through signs - semiotics (study of signs), object, idea, experience
  9. Array of tourist professionals - in contemporary society, professionals are there to create for us
