Histology Revision Flashcards
1
Q
What is haematoxylin?
A
- Alkaline dye - stains basophilic structures purple/blue
- Stains DNA, RNA and RER
2
Q
What is eosin?
A
- Acidic dye - dyes acidophilic structures pink
- Stains cytoplasmic proteins, intracellular membranes
3
Q
Outline the paraffin method of tissue sampling.
A
- Fixation in formaldehyde solution
- Clearing using xylene
- Embedded in wax
- Tissue cut into sections
- Tissue rehydrated
4
Q
What are epithelia?
A
Collective term for continuous sheets of cells
5
Q
What are the three criteria for epithelial classification?
A
- Number of layers
- Shapes of cells
- Presence of any specialised cells
6
Q
What are the terms given to the numbers of layers in epithelial tissue?
A
- SIMPLE (1 LAYER)
- STRATIFIED (2 LAYERS)
- PSEUDOSTRATIFIED (1 LAYER BUT LOOKS LIKE MORE THAN ONE)
7
Q
What are the terms given to the shapes of cells in epithelial tissue?
A
- SQUAMOUS
- CUBOIDAL
- COLUMNAR
- TRANSITIONAL
8
Q
Describe loose connective tissue.
A
- Loose arrangement of collagen and elastin fibres
- Alongside fibroblasts, plasma cells, macrophages and adipocytes
- Surrounds blood vessels and nerves
- Found in areolar tissue, lamina propria of GI and respiratory tracts, mucous membranes of GU and reproductive systems
9
Q
Describe dense irregular connective tissue.
A
- Densely packed with arrangement of collagen and elastic fibres
- Fibroblasts present, alongside capillaries
- Found in dermis and fascia surrounding muscles
10
Q
Describe dense regular connective tissue.
A
- Collagen fibres densely packed together
- Fibres run parallel to one another
- Fibroblasts and capillaries are still present
- Ligaments formed from this tissue
