Histology Of The Central Nervous System Flashcards
What is a special feature of perkinje cells?
They have a huge dendritic tree
Name the layers of the cerebral cortex from outside to inside
Gray matter: Molecular layer, external granular layer, external pyramidal cell layer, internal granular layer, internal pyramidal cell layer, Multiform cel layer.
Then white matter on inside
Name the layers of the Cerebellum from outside to inside
Gray matter: Molecular layer, perkinje cell layer, granular layer
Then white matter on the inside
Which glial cell helps maintain the blood brain barrier?
Astrocytes
What are the 3 different things that the end feet of astrocytes contact?
Blood vessels, pia mater, and neurons
What is responsible for myelination in the central nervous system?
Oligodendrocytes
What are the macrophages inside the central nervous system?
Microglia
What are the epithelial cells inside the central nervous system?
Ependymal cells
What are the 2 types of ependyma?
Ependymal cells and tanycytes
What is the visual difference between an ependymal cell and a Tanycyte?
Ependymal cells usually have a cilium coming off of it
Functions of ependyma
- making cerebral spinal fluid
- lining things that you don’t want bathed in cerebral spinal fluid
What else has a foot that contacts the blood vessel?
Tanycyte
What type of epithelium are the ependyma?
Simple cuboidal
Where is the cerebral spinal fluid made and by what?
Third ventricle by choroid plexus
Where should cerebral spinal fluid always be?
Deep to arachnoid matter; subarachnoid space
Where is the fluid of the cerebral spinal fluid coming from?
Plasma of capillaries that the ependyma is wrapping up
How do we get blood from the brain back out?
Dural venous sinus
How do you get extra cerebral spinal fluid out?
Arachnoid villi
What is it called when there is an accumulation of CSF in the ventricles and around the brain due to a blockage in the arachnoid villus?
Hydrocephalus
How do you tell the difference between dendtrites and an axon on an electromicrograph?
There are no Nissle bodies at the axon hillock which leads to the axon
