Histology – Introduction and epithelial tissue Flashcards
What are the 4 types of tissues ?
- Epithelial tissue
- Connective tissue
- Nervous tissue
- Muscle tissue
Where is epithelial tissue found ?
• Covers a surface or line a body
cavity
• Separate inner cells of hollow
organs from content
What are the characteristics of epithelial tissue ?
- Highly cellular
- Little or no extracellular material
- Presence of cell junctions
- Avascular (no blood vessels)
- Have a polarity
- Supported by connective tissue
- Regenerate themselves
What are the functions of epithelial tissues in the body ?
- Protection
- Transport
- Secretion (glands)
What is the apical surface ?
Faces the outside of the body or inside a cavity
What is the basal surface ?
Placed beneath the cells (inside the body).
How are epithelial tissues named ?
First name is defined by the number of cell layers.
(Simple = 1 layer,
Stratified = more than 1 layer)
Second name is defined by the shape of the cell
(Squamous-scale like, Cuboidal-cube like, Columnar-elongated).
What is the function of simple epithelium ?
- Transport
2. Secretion
What is the function of stratified epithelium ?
- Protection (from wear and tear)
2. Secretion
If stratified, what layer of cells determines the second name ?
The apical layer
Where is stratified squamous found?
mouth, esophagus, and vagina, protects against abrasion
Where is transitional epithelium found?
bladder, ureters, urethra. It is very stretchable which allows the urinary organs to expand and stretch.
What is glandular epithelium?
One or many cells that synthesize and secrete a product
