Histology And The Integument Flashcards
Epidermis
The superficial thinner layer of skin composed of keratinized Stratified squamous epithelium
Dermis
A layer of dense irregular connective tissue lying deep to the epidermis
Hypodermis
The inner most thickest layer of the skin and acts as an energy reserve
Keratin
An insoluble protein found in the hair, nails, and other keratinized tissues of the epidermis
Tissue
A group of similar cells and their intercellular substance joined together to perform a specific function and orgin
Epithelial tissue
Covers body surfaces ; lines body cavities, hollow organs and ducts
Connective tissue
Protects and supports the body and it’s organs, binds organs together, stores energy reserves as fat and provides immunity
Muscle tissue
Generates physical force needed to make body structures move
Nervous tissue
Directs changes inside and outside the body and initiates and transmits nerve impulses that coordinate body activities to help maintain homeostasis
Basal surface
Touches tissue
Apical
Doesn’t touch tissue
Two basic types of epithelia based on number of layers of cell define simple
One single layer of cells that function in diffusion osmosis filtaration secretion and absorption
Two basic types of epithelia based on number of layers of cell define stratified
More than one layer of cells that protects underlying tissues secretions and absorption
Squamous epithelia
FLAT thin allows rapid passages of substances through them
Cuboidal epithelia
Cube like functions in secretion or absorption
