Histology Flashcards
Epithelial
Protective layer covering surfaces in contact with the outside world
Cell layers of epithelial
Simple and stratified
Simple cell layer
Single layer of cells
Stratified
Multiple layers of cells
Cell shapes
Squamous: flat in one dimension
Cuboidal: cube shaped
Columnar: shaped like columns
Simple squamous epithelium
Found in lungs. Most delicate epithelium
Located where absorption or diffusion take place
Reduces friction
Stratified squamous epithelium
Found on surface of skin and lining of mouth. Located where mechanical stress are severe and provide protection against abrasion
Simple cuboidal epithelium
Found in kidney and thyroid gland. Resemble hexagonal boxes
Stratified cuboidal epithelium
Blood cells, mammary gland, sweat glands.
Transitional epithelium
Urinary bladder, uterus . Can change between squamous and cuboidal shape.
Repeated cycles of stretching without damage
Simple columnar epithelium
In the small intestine
Pseudo stratified ciliated columnar epithelium
Lining of the nasal cavity. Move mucus with cilia
Stratified columnar epithelium
Small areas of the pharynx,
Glandular epithelium
Gland cells specialized for secretion
Endocrine glands
Produce hormones. pituitary and thyroid gland
