Histology Flashcards
What are the four basic tissue types?
Epithelium
Connective tissue
Muscle
Nervous tissue
What is epithelium?
Epithelia (singular = epithelium) cover surfaces of the body or line hollow organs, and also form glands
They occur as sheets of cells and vary widely in size, shape, orientation and function
What is the function of connective tissue?
Connective tissue forms the framework of the body, but beyond that it has a dynamic role in the development, growth and homeostasis of tissues, and, via fat, in energy storage
Which of the salivary glands has larger numbers of mucous secreting cells?
Submandibular gland
Which glands in the body have the unique striated ducts?
Salivary glands
What do the striated ducts of the salivary glands do?
Modify the saliva passing through them, making them hypotonic to our blood
What are the layers of the digestive tract?
Mucosa - epithelium, lamina propria, muscularis mucosae
Submucosa - loose connective tissue
Muscularis propria - an inner circular layer and an outer longitudinal layer of thick smooth muscle
Adventitia or serosa - connective tissue
What function does non-keratinised stratified squamous epithelium have and where can it be found?
Protective Oral cavity Oesophagus Anal canal Pharynx
What is the name given to the three muscular strips of longitudinal muscle on the large intestine?
Teniae coli
Where are the ganglia of the enteric nervous system?
Between the two layers of muscularis externa
