Histology Flashcards
Epithelium
• Stratified squamous-protects from wear n’ tear
(esophagus, skin, anus)
• Simple cuboidal- secrete and absorb
(kidneys, salivary glands, ducts)
• Pseudostratified columnar-secretes mucus, cilia move mucus along
(airways of respiratory system)
• Simple squamous- diffusion
(alveoli in lungs, inner lining of blood vessels & heart)

Connective Tissue
*Areolar CT- attaches skin to muscle (Hypodermis)
- Reticular CT-gives structural integrity to (thymus, spleen, lymphnodes)
- Dense regular CT-parallel collagen fibers (ligaments, tendons)
- Dense irregular CT- mesh of collagen fibers (dermis)
- Hyaline cartilage-smooth collagen fibers (trachea, ribs, etc.)
- Elastic cartilage- grainy collagen & elastic fibers (epiglottis, ear)
- Bone-RBC formation, calcium, support (osteon is circular unit of bone)
- Blood- Neutrophils, Lymphocytes, Monocytes, Eosinophils, Basophils

Blood
• Blood-
Neutrophils (serveral nuclei)
Lymphocytes (all nucleus)
Monocytes (M)
Eosinophils (pink around nucleus)
RBC’s-Erythrocytes
Basophil-grainy dark purple

Muscle
- Skeletal -movement, striated (multinucleated)
- Smooth- peristalsis, no striation (blood vessels, digestive tract)
- Cardiac- striated, single nucleated (Intercalated disk- junction between cells)

Nervous tissue- multipolar neurons and other neuroglial cells
(brain, spinal cord)

Eye- choroid & retina
