2
Q

what is fixation? and the different types

A

fixation preserves the tissue
chemical fixation uses aldehyde based chemicals to preserve
freezing uses dry ice or liquid nitrogen to preserve

Q

What is embedding?

A

when the cells are embedded in something to provide support for the tissue when sectioning. paraffin wax most commonly used

Q

what is sectioning?

A

cutting the tissue into thin sections using a microtome.

Q

what is PAS staining?

A

used for staining complex carbohydrates and glycogen. if something is stained with PAS it is PAS +

Q

what is electron microscopy?

A

uses a beam of electron instead of light to increase resolution to allow smaller structures to be viewed clearly

Q

what are glandular epithelia?

A

secretory epithelia arranged into glands
invaginations of epithelium
also glandular organs

Q

what are simple cuboidal epithelium

A

a single layer of cube shaped cells which are good for diffusion, secretion and absorption

13
Q

what are simple columnar epithelium

A

a single layer of tall, narrow cells which allow movement of substances, absorption and secretion and offer more protection than flatter cells

Q

what are stratisfied squamous epithelium

A

multiple layers of cells which are cube shaped in the basal layer. they protect against abrasion, a barrier against infection and reduce water loss

15
Q

what is the pseudostratisfied epithelium

A

single layer- some layers reach the free surface others do not. they synthesise and secrete mucus and move mucus that contains foreign particles over the surface

16
Q

transitional epithelium

A

cuboidal when not stretched, squamous/flattened when stretched. number of layers decreases as cells shift on top of one another. they accommodate fluctuations in the volume of fluid in organs and protect against the caustic effects of urine

17
Q

what is histology?

A

the study of micro anatomy of cells, tissues and organs as seen through a microscope

18
Q

what are tissues

A

groups of similar cells working together to carry out a common function

19
Q

what is a parenchyma?

A

a working tissue

20
Q

what is a stroma?

A

scaffold and nutrition

21
Q

what is an organ?

A

several tissue types comprised in a morphologically recognisable structure and performs a specific set of functions

22
Q

what does connective tissue do?

A

protects and supports

23
Q

what is epithelial tissue?

A

covers/lines the body surfaces

24
Q

what do muscle tissue do?

A

cells contract to generate force

25
Q

what does nervous tissue do?

A

generates electrical signals in response to the environment
