HISTOLOGY Flashcards
The shape is further classified based on the cells in their most
superficial layer
- When cells get stretched and flattened out it becomes (transitional epithelium in urinary bladder)
stratified squamous epithelium
Interconnecting tubules, vesicles, and flattened sacs (cisternae) which are fluid field cavities enclosed by unit membranes
Endoplasmic Reticulum
- has attached ribosomes
- Receives the proteins that are synthesized by the ribosomes- processes these proteins before passing them to the Golgi bodies in the form of transfer vesicles
Rough ER (rer)
- has no ribosomes attached
- Site of lipid synthesis, fats, and cholesterols. Also involved in the metabolism of carbohydrates, detoxification, and transportation of lipids and fatty acids.
Smooth ER (ser)
Consists of several layers of membrane-bound, smooth-surfaced and flattened tubes (cisternae) that are stacked on top of each other in a semicircular manner.
* Lateral ends exhibit dilations filled with fluid.
* Works by processing, concentrating, sorting and packaging of proteins that are sent by the rER.
* Proteins are then released into the cytoplasmic matrix in a form of secretory vesicles.
Golgi
present in liver (hepatocytes) and muscles cells
Glycogen
Also called microtubule organizing center (mtoc)
* Dense, spherical area in the cytoplasm.
* Consist of pairs of centrioles
* Organelles that produce microtubules that fo* Its walls are made up of 9 groups of microtubules. Each group is called triplets (3 microtubules)
Centrosome
Centrosome produces (3)
Cilia
Microtubule
flagellum/ flagella
Present in all cells
▪ Abundant in the peripheral areas of the cells just beneath the cell membrane – involved in endocytosis and exocytosis
- Microfilament
Single layer of tall cells
Simple columnar epithelium
lines the airways of the respiratory system
Ciliated Pseudostratified columnar epithelium
Cells in the most superficial layer are flat or plaque-like
Stratified squamous epithelium
Consists of several layers of membrane-bound, smooth-surfaced and flattened tubes (cisternae) that are stacked on top of each other in a semicircular manner.
Golgi:
stores numerous fat droplets
Brown adipose tissue
