HISTOLOGY Flashcards
What are skeletal muscle fibres made from
Individual cells formed by the fusion of multiple myoblasts
What is endomysium
Collagen fibres between connective tissues that surrounds individual fibres
Role of sharpeys fibres
Connect muscle to bone
What do sarcomeres do
Join end to end to form myofibrils
What would skeletal muscle look like
Stripy appearance due to the myofibrils
Long muscle fibres dark purple nuclei on edges of muscle fibres
What would cardiac muscle look like
Stripy appearance
At the end of muscle fibres you would see intercalated discs
What would smooth muscle look like
Non striated
Often found surrounding ducts
Skeletal muscle fibre types
1
2a
2b
What do type 1 fibres do
Use aerobic metabolism to function , appear red due to loads of myoglobin , slow twitch fibres
What do type 2a fibres do
Energy from oxidative glicoylysis , lot of glycogen
Fast twitch
What are type 2b role
Energy from anaerobic respiration
Fast twitch
Prone to fatigue
Tissue sheets around skeletal muscle
Endomysium - around single muscle fibres
Perimysium- around multiple muscle fibres
Epysium. - around the whole muscle
What is a neuromuscular junction
Place on the sarcolemma where motor fibres synapse with muscle in order to deliver contractions
What are the functional units of skeletal muscle tissue
Fascicles
