histoligy Flashcards
what is histoligy?
the study of tissue
What are the 4 major types of tissue?
Epithelial, Connective , Muscle, Nervous.
what forms cell connections?
membrane proteins
what are the three different types of cell junctions?
Tight junctions, Anchoring junctions, Gap junctions
what kind of junction has a partial fusion of specifique proteins on the lateral surface of the cell membrane and prevents material from passing between cells?
tight junctions
what kind of junction fastens cells to each other and/or to extracellular material?
Anchoring Junctions
what kind of junction has an open channel through the ajacent cell membranes, interconnecting the cytosols of the cell. allows passage of ions/small molecules from one cell to the other?
Gap junctions
what king of tissue is an Epithelial tissue?
its a lining tissue
whats kind of tissue is a Connective Tissue?
it connects tissues
what kind of tissue is a Muscle tissue?
its a contracting tissue
whats kind of tissue is a nervous tissue?
its a signaling tissue
what does Epithelial tissue do?
it line the body/ organ cavities (skin)
what are some characteristics of Epithelial tissue?
- has one free surfacee
- little extracellular space between cells
- avascular
- basement membrane
- extracellular layer
what does stratified mean?
means more than one layer
what does simple mean when you are reffering to layers of tissue?
one layer
what does squamous mean ?
flattened
what does cuboidal mean?
cube/round
what does columnar mean?
taller than wide
there are three subtypes to simple epithelia, what are they?
simple squamous (squished flat cells), simple cuboidal (cubed shaped) and simple columnar (column shaped cells)
what subtypes are the to stratified epithelia??
stratified squamous (flat) stratified cuboidal (cubed shaped) stratified columnar (column shaped)
what is pseudostratified epithelia?
appears stratified but all cells sit on basement membrane= simple
what is transitional epithelia?
cell shape varies with stretching. (found only on inner layering of urinary system) cuboidal to squamous when stretched.
what kind of epithelium has exocrine and endocrine glands?
glandular epithelium
what do unicellular exocrine glands do?
secrete mucus in the digestive urinary, reproductive and respatory tracts
what do multicellular exocrine glands consist of?
secretory and duct cells
E.G. glands: sudoriferous (sweat), sebaceous (oil), mammary, digestive
endocrine glands have ducts, true or false
false! they are ductless
what are three functions of Epithelia?
Protection, secretion, control of permeability.
are cells close or far apart in Connective Tissue?
far appart, separated by an extracellular matrix
what do cell name ending in “blast” do? e.g. osteblast, chondroblast etc.
they create matrix
what do cell names ending in “cyte” do? e.g. osteocyte, chondrocyte etc
they maintain matrix
what do cell names ending in clast do?
they break down matrix
between loose CT and Dense CT which is vascular??
loose CT is highly vascular
does dense CT have little or many fibres?
many
is cartilage vascular or avascular?
avascular
is bone vascular or avascular?
Very vascular
give me three subtypes of muscle tissue.
skeletal, cardiac, smooth
what two cell types are in nervous tissue?
neurons and glial cells
