Cellular level of orginization Flashcards
what is a cell
it is the basic stuctural and functional unit of the body
can perform all basic life functions
what are other words for cell membrane?
plasma membrane, plasmalemma
what is the cell membrane composed of?
phospholipid bilayer
cholesterol
membrane proteins
what does ICF stand for?
intra cellular fluid
what does ECF stand for?
extracellular fluid
the phosphate head group is considered as _______
hydrophillic
the FA Tails are considered ______
hydrophobic
how many types of intergral proteins are there and what are they called?
2 types… integral and peripheral proteins
where are membrane carbohydrates found??
only on outter surface
what are functions of membrane carbohydrates?
cell recognition E.G. egg and sperm (sperm can find egg and knows its at the right spot because of membrane carbohydates ((its like an adress)))
what is microvilli?
small projections (like hair) of the cell membrane to increase surface area of cell and speed up absorbtion
Explain Fluid and Mosaic from The Fluid-Mosaic Model of the membrane
Fluid—> constituants can move around (phospholipids + some proteins.
Mosaic—> proteins dot the surface like tiles on a mosaic.
what is cytoplasm
It is the AREA between inside of the cell membrane and the outside of the nucleus.
What two divisions are there in Cytoplasm?
A) cytosol
B) organelles
I am a gel like fluid, I contain water and a suspension of carbohydrates, proteins and lipids.
I mayu contain inclusions E.G. melanin(pigment), glycogen(stored glucose) what am I ??
cytosol.
