Histo Lec: M12 - Lymphatic System Flashcards
system of specialized vessels and organs whose main function is to return the lymph from the tissues back into the bloodstream
The lymphatic system
is a clear, yellowish fluid present in most tissues of the body. It is created as a result of the filtration of the plasma.
Lymph
The smallest lymphatic vessels that collect the interstitial fluid from the tissues.
Lymphatic capillaries
The lymphatic vessels are divided into:
Superficial and deep lymphatic vessels
Lymph vessels are lined by?
Single layer of squamous endothelium
They house lymphocytes and other immune cells (e.g. macrophages, plasmocytes, dendrocytes)
Lymph Nodes
one of the body’s main immune cells. They arise from the stem cells in the primary lymphoid organs and belong to the part of the immune system called the acquired immunity.
Lymphocytes
serve as a nursery for the formation and development of the lymphocytes.
Primary lymphoid organs
Primary lymphoid organs are?
The bone marrow and thymus
B cells fully develop in?
Bone Marrow
The secondary lymphoid organs are?
the spleen, tonsils, vermiform appendix, lymph nodes, and specialized lymphoid tissue of the mucosae (MALT)
Types of bone marrow in the body:
The red and yellow marrow
Type of marrow that is most abundant in all skeletal structures from intrauterine life up until around the 5th year of life (in human)
Red marrow
Encapsulated primary lymphoid organ.
Thymus
antigen presenting cells (APC) that express both class I and class II major histocompatibility complex (MHC I and MHC II) proteins that participate in the thymic education program.
Cytoreticular cells
