Histo Flashcards
Tarsal Glands (Meibomian)
secretion retards evaporation of tears
*blockage leads to chalazion
Sebaceous Gland of Eyelashes (Zeis)
infected –> stye
Lacrimal Gland
tear production
What is the epithelium on the outside of the lens? inside?
- Stratified squamous - keratinized
2. Stratified columnar
Palpebral and Bulbar Conjunctiva
thin mucous membrane lining space b/t inner eyelid and ends just lateral to cornea
*stratified columnar with goblet cells
What are the three layers of the eye?
- Corneoscleral
- Vascular Coat
- Retina
What is the chief refractive element of the eye?
the cornea
What are the five cornea layers?
- Corneal Epithelium - NKSS
- Bowman’s membrane
- Corneal Stroma - avascular
- Descemet’s membrane
- Corneal Endothelium - simple squamous
Where do we find stem cells for the cornea?
limbus region
What does the vascular coat consist of?
- Choroid
- Ciliary Body - ciliary m. and ciliary processes
- Iris - dilator and sphincter pupillae
Three components of the Lens
- Capsule
- Subcapsular Lens Epithelium
- Lens Fibers
What is presbyopia? cataracts?
- loss of lens elasticity with age
2. loss of transparency of lens or capsule
What type of epithelium is retinal pigmented layer?
simple cuboidal
- serves as blood neutral retinal barrier (absorbs stray light)
- phagocytoses membranous discs shed from rods and cones
- isomerizes all trans retinal to 11 cis retinal
What are the two things to know about the neural retina?
- contains photosensor cells
2. has no lymphatics
What is the optic disc?
blind spot in retina where optic nerves from ganglion layer exit the eye
