Hip Tests Flashcards
Trendelenburg’s Sign
- ST
- Standing
- slowly lift one foot off the ground
Positive Test: hip on the non-weight bearing leg drops/is lower than the weight bearing side
Interpretation:
weakness in the hip abductors, gluteus minims/medius on the weight bearing leg (cannot stabilize pelvis)
**Fulcrum test
- ST
- sitting
Lateral Rotators of the Hip
- MMT
- sitting w/knees bent over side
- with one hand examiner applies pressure @ lateral side of lower end of thigh
- with other hand examiner applies pressure @ medial side of the leg above the ankle
- pushes the leg outward in an effort to rotate the thigh medially
Positive test:
medial rotation of the femur accompanied by pronation of the foot. also a tendency toward valgus position
Subjective Evaluation (considerations)
- pt. age
- weight bearing structure
- MOI
- nature of complaints
- Site, Source & Course
Common Radicular/Referral Patterns
- anterior labral/hip flexor strain = groin and medial thigh
- Posterior labral tear = buttocks pain
- Trochanteric Bursitis = radiating down the lateral thigh
Kinds of pain
- sharp intense pain = fracture
- increased pain while sitting with legs crossed = trochanteric bursitis
Joint Mobilizations
- Anterior glide
- Posterior glide
- Inferior glide
Loose packed position
30 degrees flexion
30 degrees abduction
slight lateral rotation
Craig’s Test
- Prone w/knee flexed to 90
- examiner palpates the posterior aspect of the greater trochanter
- measure angle formed between the vertical axis extending from the table top and the longitudinal axis of the lower leg
- greater than 20 degrees is considered abnormal
Craigs test findings
- normal range = 8-15 degrees
- excessively greater than 15 degrees is femoral anteversion (internal torsion)
- excessively less than 8 degrees is femoral retroversion (external torsion)
Anterior Labral Tear Test
- supine
- examiner takes hip into full flexion, lateral rotation, and full abduction as starting position
- examiner extends hip combined with medial rotation and adduction
Anterior Labral Tear Test Postitive Findings
- production of pain
- reproduction of patients symptoms with/or w/out click or apprehension
*Test puts the greatest strain on the anterolateral labrum
