Hip & lower limb Flashcards
What actions does the quadratus lumborum do?
Unilaterally:
• Laterally tilt (elevate) the pelvis
• Laterally flex the vertebral column to the same side
• Assist to extend the vertebral column
Bilaterally:
• Fix the last rib during forced inhalation and exhalation
Where does the quadratus lumborum attach?
Origin:
• The posterior iliac crest
Insertion:
• Last rib and transverse processes of first through fourth lumbar vertebrae
What does the rectus abdominus do?
Flex the vertebral column
Tilt the pelvis posteriorly
Where does the rectus abdominus attach?
Public crest
Public symphysis
Cartilage of 5th, 6th and 7th ribs
Xiphoid process
What does the external oblique do?
Laterally flex vertebral column to the same side
Rotate the vertebral column to the opposite side
Bilaterally:
Flex the vertebral column
Compress abdominal contents
Where does the external oblique attach?
External surface of 5th through 12th ribs
Anterior part of iliac crest, rectus sheath to linea alba
What does the internal oblique do?
Laterally flex vertebral column to the same side
Rotate the vertebral column to the same side
Bilaterally:
Flex the vertebral column
Compress abdominal contents
Where does the internal oblique attach?
Laterial inguinal ligament iliac crest thoracolumbar fascia Internal surface of lower three ribs Rectus sheath to linea alba
What does the transverse abdominus do?
Compress the abdominal contents
There are no other movements
Where does the transverse abdominus attach?
Lateral inguinal ligament Iliac crest Thoracolumbar fascia Internal surface of lower 6 ribs Rectus sheath to linea alba
What does the iliacus do?
Action: With the origin fixed: • Flex the hip (coxal joint) • May laterally rotate the hip (coxal joint) With the insertion fixed: • Flex the trunk toward the thigh • Tilt pelvis anteriorly
Where does the iliacus attach?
Origin:
• Iliac fossa
Insertion:
• Lesser trochanter
What does the psoas do?
Action: With the origin fixed: • Flex the hip (coxal joint) • May laterally rotate the hip (coxal joint) With the insertion fixed: • Flex the trunk toward the thigh • Tilt pelvis anteriorly Unilaterally: • Assist to laterally flex the lumbar spine
Where does the psoas attach?
Origin:
• Bodies and transverse processes of lumbar vertebrae
Insertion:
• Lesser trochanter
What does the gluteus Maximus do?
All fibres: Extend the hip Laterally rotate the hip Abduct the hip (coxal joint) Lower fibers: Adduct the hip (coxal joint)
