Q

What actions do the intercostals do?

A
  • External intercostals: Draw the ribs superiorly (increasing the space of the thoracic cavity) to assist with inhalation
  • Internal intercostals: Draw the ribs inferiorly (decreasing the space of the thoracic cavity) to assist with exhalation
17
Q

What muscle is in a 1cm radius to the intercostals?

A

Diaphragm
• Costal attachment: Inner surface of lower six ribs
• Lumbar attachment: Upper two or three lumbar vertebrae
• Sternal attachment: Inner part of xiphoid process
• Central tendon

18
Q

What are the actions of the serratus anterior?

A
  • Abduct the scapula
  • Upwardly rotate the scapula
  • Depress the scapula
  • Hold the medial boarder of the scapula against the ribcage
  • Elevate the thorax during forced inhalation
19
Q

What muscle is in a 1cm radius to the serratus anterior?

A

20
Q

What are the actions of the trapezius?

A

Bilaterally:
• Extend the head and neck
Unilaterally:
• Laterally flex the head and neck to the same side
• Rotate the head and neck to the opposite side
• Elevate the scapula (scapulothoracic joint)
• Upwardly rotate the scapula (S/T joint)
