Hip Joint Flashcards
Which bones form the acetabulum?
ileum, ischium and pubis
What is the lunate surface of the acetabulum?
the weight bearing part of the acetabulum
Which parts of the acetabulum are non articular?
the fossa filled by a fat pad and a notch filled by the ligament of head of femur
Where is the epiphyses in the head of the the femur?
at the anatomical neck
What is the fovea of the head of the femur?
the non articular site where the ligament of head of femur attaches
Where is the intertrochanteric line?
between the greater and lesser trochanters anteriorly
Where is the intertrochanteric crest?
between the greater and lesser trochanters posteriorly
What is responsible for growth and fusion of pressure epiphyses in the femur?
weight bearing
What is responsible for growth and fusion of traction epiphyses in the femur?
force of contraction from gluteal muscles
In what direction is the femoral head oriented?
upwards, medially and anteriorly
What protects the part of the femoral head which is outside the capsule?
the psoas bursa
What increases the surface area of the hip joint?
the labrum
What is the role of the ligament of head of femur?
direct a branch of the obturator artery to the head of the femur
What are the 4 trabecular systems in the bone of the femur?
vertical, arcuate, medial and lateral
Where does the line of gravity pass compared to the hip joint?
behind
What is the open packed position of the hip joint?
flexed, laterally rotated and adducted
What ligaments reinforce the hip joint?
iliofemoral ligament, pubofemoral ligament, ischiofemoral ligament
What is the role of the iliofemoral ligament?
to resist extension by spiraling and tightening
What nerves is the hip joint innervated by?
femoral and obturator nerves
What nerve will give referred pain from the hip?
the obturator nerve
What will refer pain to the hip?
the sacroiliac joint and the lumbar spine
What is the blood supply of the hip?
medial and lateral femoral circumflex arteries, artery of head of femur, retinacular vessels
What fracture is associated with a dislocation of the hip?
fracture of the posterior lip of the acetabulum
What nerve is endangered in a dislocation of the hip?
sciatic nerve
What position of the leg indicates a fracture of the neck of femur?
external rotation and shortening of the limb - due to muscle spasm
When is the blood supply to the hip joint at risk?
in a fracture of the neck of femur
