Hip Flexion Grades 0-2

A

Muscle: iliopsoas

Position: side lying on side being tested, flexion of hip (knee to chest)

Stabilization: support under non-test limb, holding underneath knee and lower leg

Grades 0-1: supine, 90 degrees knee flexion, flexion of hip

Stabilization: support test limb, holding underneath knee and lower leg

A

Position: sitting on edge of table (can hold onto sides of table), flexion of hip

Stabilization: ipsilateral iliac crest (making sure pt is not leaning back/moving pelvis)

Resistance: anterior, distal femur

Resistance: medial/distal thigh, proximal to medial aspect of knee

Position: supine, simultaneously flex/abduct/externally rotate hip and slide test leg up contralateral tibia through full range of combined motions

Stabilization: ipsilateral pelvis

Position: seated, simultaneously flex/abduct/externally rotate hip (can hold onto table) or ask patient to slide ipsilateral heel up contralateral shin

Resistance:

  1. adduction force at lateral knee
  2. internal rotation/extension at medial malleolus

Position: side lying on side being tested, start in knee flexion/hip in a neutral position, and slide into knee extension

Stabilization: support non-test limb underneath inner thigh (30 degrees hip abduction) while also stabilizing pelvis with elbow

Grade 0-1: posterior knee (between knee and table)

Position: sitting on edge of table (towel under leg), extend knee

Stabilization: iliac crest/pelvis, pt stabilizes by holding onto table

Resistance: anterior tibia, in between knee and ankle
