Hip Flashcards
What connects the very tip of the femoral head to the acetabulum?
Ligamentum teres
How many strong ligaments make up hip joint capsule which is main source of stability for hip?
3
What do ligaments connect?
Bone to bone
What is a joint capsule?
Water tight capsule surrounding joint
What does Ligamentum teres hold?
Obturator artery which brings very small blood supply to femoral head
What is labrum?
Special type of ligament that is around acetabulum and makes a deeper socket for femoral ball
What are 4 muscle groups in hip?
Gluteal, lateral rotator, abductor, iliopsoas
What two major arteries that supply blood to hip?
Medial circumflex femoral artery and lateral circumflex femoral artery, usually branch from deep artery but can come from femoral.
What can happen when medial circumflex and lateral circumflex arteries are disrupted?
Avascular necrosis
Osteoarthritis
Wearing away of the normal smooth cartilage until bare bone is exposed
Name 4 common types of arthritis
Osteo, rheumatoid, gouty, lupus
Rheumatoid arthritis
Inflames joint lining, usually develops in middle age but may occur in 20s and 30s. Chronic inflammatory disease causes joint pain, stiffness, and swelling.
