Demographic characterisitcs of the place - Flows of people
100 meter higher than the city of London, the raised elevation is a result of ancient sea level change. High altitude also meant that the smog from central London did not bother the people who lived here. Therefore was made home to rich and upper class.
Escaped the water born outbreaks of cholera in the 1800s.
These conditions meant that house prices in the area are very high and a five bedroom house with a view of the heath cost 20 million pounds in 2017.
64% are white, only 20% are of Black background and only 9% are of Asian background.
45% are christian and 24% have no religion, only 14% are muslim and 3% jewish.

Highgate has been impacted by the spread of globalisation and McDonald’s in 1992 moved to Highgate. More global brands and shops have moved to the Highstreet in recent years.
Overseas property buyers came to Highgate since the 1990s and Russian, Chinese, French and middle eastern money has been poured into Highgate.
Cultural characterisitcs of the place - Flows of people
Currently 70% of people in Haringey speak english and the next largest language is turkish, at only 4.9%.
Tourism diversifies Highgate and further influences it as a place, more and more people can relate to this place as where they belong where there are increased connections from Highgate to other places and nations.
E.G. Karl Marx was a German Philosopher and is buried in Highgate cemetery, his grave could be visited by people from outside Highgate.
Increased diversity in Highgate, increased diversity of services, this gives Highgate a sense of place, and has huge influence on high gates environment and how people feel towards it.
