Higher (Critical Short Essay) Flashcards
Introduction?
An essay in which the writer is the question by George Orwell. Orwell was part of an imperial police in Burma 1930 where he witnessed a hanging which led him to develop a strong sense of wrongness for capital punishment.
In this essay he is trying to… the reader that capital punishment is wrong. Ommiting the actual crime of the prisoners instead focusing on the negative effects it had on them.
1st paragraph?
At the start of the essay the writer tries to…. the reader about the wrongness of punishment by helping us visualise the setting, the horrible living conditions prisoners live in saying its not for human use as he compares them to small animal cages. He then goes onto describe the size and capacity of the cages which led to prisoners having to squat emphasising the point that the cells are too small even for a person to stand up straight instead they are forced to try and make themselves fit inside.
This is…… because it shows the reader the dehumanising effects of capital punishment and its effects on how ppl are treated and handled as they are forced to live in these conditions which will result in a effect on their physical and mental health

As we read on in the essay we can see the writer tries to …… the reader all the wrongs of capital as he describes the contrast between 2 ppl. When he sees a prisoner being taken out of his cell analysing and describing his appearance as well as the army doctor doing the same to him. Using words like
“Thick sprouting mustache”
saying prisoners is uncared for and not groomed the contast is empathised as he talks about the army doctor using the expression
“ a grey toothbrush mustache”
Saying his is cared for and maintained compared to the prisoners showing their positions and environments one being able to keep himself tidy while the other cannot even try to keep himself maintained.
This idea is….. as it shows the contact between prisoner and army doctor and the negatives effects of capital punishment on ppl w different status and how horribly it fan effect ppl who can’t retaliate against it.

Reading on IN the essay gerome tries to …us about the wrongness of capital.punishment as he describes a doh which appears randomly as a prison wasnfoing to go get hanged
He use wild with glee shows he is happy seeing ppl despite the situation
Winter also implies dog is free unlike prisoner Orwell confines by expressing body langue and actions that dog don’t know what it was doing
This shows us there is no empathy for prisnor
Shows us capital punishment takes away ppls freedom having effect on metal and physical health
