High Blood Pressure and Heart Disease Flashcards
2) Cigarettes contain carbon monoxide, how does this effect red blood cells?
Carbon monoxide combines with haemoglobin in red blood cells decreasing their oxygen carrying capacity
1) Smoking can increase…?
Blood pressure
3) How does carbon monoxide increase blood pressure?
To compensate for the lack of oxygen reaching tissues as a result of the effects of carbon monoxide, heart rate increases (heart contracts more frequently), this increases blood pressure
4) What is the problem with nicotine in relation to blood pressure?
Nicotine increases the heart rate which increases blood pressure
5) What is heart disease?
Any disease that effects the heart
6) What two factors within a persons diet can increase the risk of developing heart disease?
Saturated fat and salt
7) What is cholesterol?
A fatty substance that can build up in the arteries
8) What is linked to high levels of cholesterol in the blood?
Saturated fat
9) What is cholesterol used for?
Making cell membranes
10) A build up of cholesterol can form plaques in the artery wall which narrows the arteries, what is the result of this?
Blood flow is restricted, can cause a heart attack
11) Eating too much salt can…?
Increase blood pressure
12) What effect can high blood pressure have on the arteries?
Damage can be made that encourages plaque to build up which can lead to a heart attack
13) What supplies the heart muscle with blood?
The coronary arteries
14) If arteries become narrowed the heart muscle…?
Receives less oxygen
15) What’s a thrombosis?
A blood clot that restricts blood flow
