Hierarchy Of Structure Flashcards
What is the hierarchy of structure and what does it include?
organelle, cell, tissue, organ, organ system, organism
What are the 4 types of animal tissues?
connective, epithelial, muscular and nervous tissue
Describe the connective tissue and give an example of what it does.
Cells held together by a liquid/solid/gel matrix- structurally support and insulate other tissues and organs. Ex it connects, bone, cartilage, fat, blood
Describe the epithelial tissue and give an example of what it does.
Sheets of closely packed, flat sheets of cells lining organs
Prevents dehydration and reduces friction
Ex. skin, digestive tract, lining of blood vessels ex. it covers
Describe the muscular tissue and give an example of what it does.
Bundles of long cells that can contract (shorten)
Pull on bones/tendons to allow movement. Ex. movement
What are the three types of Muscle tissue and what are their functions.
(Skeletal), Body movements
(Smooth), Lines hollow vessels (ex. blood vessels and intestines)
(Cardiac), Heart muscle
Describe the nervous tissue and give an example of what it does.
They are Long, thin cells with fine branches. Neurons conduct electrical impulses and allow for communication within the body
Ex. nerves, brain it sends signals
