Why was the castle built?
To protect the settlement against attack.
Who built the castle?
Soldiers, sailors and slaves
What was the castle built with?
rock, wood from Hout Bay. They made a very strong cement out of sand, crushed shells and lime.
Is the Castle the oldest building in SA?
Yes
The castle is a 5 pointed stone building, did Jan van Riebeeck built it?
No, it was built by the Dutch East India Company between 1666 and 1679. It wasn’t the first, it replaced an older fort built by Jan van Riebeeck when he arrived.
When did Jan v Riebeeck arrived at the Cape?
1652
What was the fort called?
Fort de Goede Hoop and was made out of clay and wood.
During the war between 1899 - 1902 what was part of the castle used for?
a prison
The castle was declared a national monument, in which year? What is it used for today?
