Offspring
the new individuals of parents: babies, kittens, puppies, seedlings…
Heredity
the passing of traits from parents to offspring
Generation
the period of time between the birth of an organism and its reproduction
Traits
the chemical, physical or biological expression of a particular gene; eye color, good eyesight, especially salty tears…
Phenotype
He description of a trait
Genotype
an abbreviation that shows the two genetic codes of a particular trait, one on each chromosome (AA, Aa, aa)
Dominant
The allele for a trait that is always expressed in an organism
Recessive
the allele for a trait that is not expressed, or is “hidden” if there is a dominant form present
Purebred
offspring that have the same genotypes as both parents, “pure”
Hybrid
offspring that have traits that are due to a combination of different parent genotypes
Codominant
-two alleles for the same trait that are both expressed
Sex-linked
an allele that is located on the sex chromosomes, does not have to code for a trait that is associated with a sexual trait
Clone
the production of a new individual with an identical code to the parent
Pedigree
a chart that shows the pattern of inheritance of a trait in a blood-related family
Congenital
a disorder, or problem, of an individual that is present at birth
