Life Review Flashcards
Minerals
Atoms and molecules from rocks
Examples: iron, sodium, calcium
Proteins
Molecule made by living organisms(animals) that have nitrogen, carbon, oxygen
Vitamins
Small building block molecules made by living organisms that, bonded together, make proteins
Carbohydrates
Molecules made by living organisms(plants) that are sugars, simple and complex
Example: pasta, rice
Lipids
Molecules made by living organisms that are fats
Example: butter, copholesterol
Soluble
Able to be dissolved
Cellular Respiration
Process in which sugar combined with oxygen releases energy by the mitochondria in the cell
Niche
A location with all of the biotic and abiotic factors needed for an organism
Life Processes
All living organisms must carry on activities necessary to life
Nutrition
The process of getting food or making food
Photosynthesis
When green plants create there own food
Glucose
A simple sugar
Vacuole
An organelle in plant and fungus cells that stores nutrients
Semi-permeable
Allowing only some molecules to pass through
Osmosis
A process of water passing back and fourth through a cell membrane
Sessile
Describes an animal that is stuck to something and can’t move
Example: barnacles, blue muscles, oysters
Enzyme
A molecule that speeds up a chemical reaction
Protoplasm
Living tissue
Prokaryote
Primitive (not evolved yet) cells without organelles.
Ex. Bacteria
Eukaryotes
Complex cells with organelles
Ex. Humans, animals, plants
Cilia
Little hair like structures on the outside of cells that move materials or the cell around
Diffusion
Process of materials moving in and out of the cell without using energy
Active transport
Process of moving materials in and out of the cell with energy
Homeostasis
The state of having everything balanced and functioning in a living organism
