Who were the Waldensians?
Occupied Germany, central Europe, southern France and northern Italy, attacking church corruption rather than doctrine
Some member sought separation from official Catholic worship in favour of scriptural reading
Who was John Wyclif?
Attacked indulgences and monasticism, claiming they had no scriptural warrant
Also rejected scholastic theology in favour of sola scriptura and opposed the Eucharist
Who was Jan Hus?
Emphasised Scripture as sole authority like Wyclif and was highly critical of the Church in Bohemia
Criticised aspects of the Mass and advocated for Communion in both kinds for laity
What happened to Jan Hus?
Condemned of heresy and burned at the 1415 Council of Constance despite being granted safe conduct
Who was Girolamo Savonarola?
Florentine Dominican friar prophesying doom for the Church and Florentine govt, denouncing them as self-serving and corrupt
Against all forms of excess and luxury - wanted blasphemers’ tongues run through with skewers
What was the reaction to Savonarola by:
a) RCC
b) Florence
a) Pope invited him to Rome in 1495, but claimed he was ill, leading to papal denouncement that year and excommunication in Feb 1498
b) Continued to control Florence, yet in 1498 riots over one of his disciples shying away from performing a miracle degenerated into his arrest, torture and hanging
Why was anti-clericalism so rife?
Came as a result of low standards of laic spiritual care and clerical corruption
Exacerbated by frustration with numerous church taxes, its secular power, invasive courts and blatant corruption
How did priests neglect their duties?
Absenteeism, failure to administer the sacraments, neglecting of their duties, all disillusioned the laity
What did anti-clericalism help form?

Made members of the laity practise Christianity independent of the church, pursuing the ‘via mixta’ like Devotia Moderna
Created a reformist movement, not a separatist one, aimed on improving RCC and strengthening the clergy
