Heredity, enviroment, and genetic research Flashcards
Evolutionary psychology
How psychological traits and behaviors and evolved over time to enhance survival and reproductive success. Body chooses fight or flight
Natural selection
More likely to survive to their original environment. Social intelligence is needed to have a higher chance of reproduction or survival
Nature
Biological and genetic factors that influence an individual’s psychological development, traits, behaviors, and cognitive abilities. Traits inherited from parents (hair color, eye color, height etc.) Genes and how our brain is structured
Nurture
The environmental influences the development, cognitive processes, and behavior. Parenting styles, methods, social media, and friends (environment)
Twin studies
examines similarities and differences between twins and see the relative influence of genetics and environment on traits and behaviors. What’s the same and what’s different between twins, fraternal and identical
Adoption studies
Similarities between adopted siblings. The influence their environment has on them.
Family studies
Similarities amongst family members. Traits from other family members being studied
Heredity
Transition of genetic information from biological parents to offspring (intelligence is hereditary)
Genetic predisposition
Inherited likelihood of developing specific traits or conditions due to genetic factors from biological parents. Ex: You’re more likely to have anxiety if your parents do.
Eugenics
Improving the genetic quantity of a human population by controlling reproduction to increase desirable traits and increase undesirable ones. Differences between people in your family tree
