Chemical messangers Flashcards
Neurotransmitters
Send signals between neurons. They are chemical messengers
Excitatory neurotransmitters
Increase the likelihood of an action potential occurring in the postsynaptic neuron. More likely to fire an action potential
Glutamate
Includes learning, memory, and neuro plasticity. It is an exitory neurotransmitter. It is also chemicals that your body naturally makes
Inhibitory neurotransmitters
Declares the likelihood of an action potential occurring in the postsynaptic neuron
GABA
Promotes relaxation and reduced anxiety. Acts as the primary inhibitory neurotransmitter in the central nervous system
Dopamine
Regulating mood, reward, motivation and movement. Ex: when you hear a notification on your phone and when you want to check it
Serotonin
Plays a vital role in regulating mood, sleep, stress, and appetite. Ex: being in a good mood because of the weather
Endorphins
Natural pain relaxers. Released during movement that cause stress, pain, or increase physical activity. Even something as simple as walking
Substance P
Transmits pain signals. When you touch something hot, substance P is what tells you to remove your hand from the surface
Acetylcholine
Muscle contractions, memory, and learning. Plays a role on the central nervous system and the peripheral nervous system
Hormones
Regulate various physiological processes and behaviors
Ghrelin
Stimulates appetite and promotes hunger
