infusions
For heard woody parts of the plants (roots, wood, bark, nuts, seeds, berries). More heat for longer time
decoctions
Topical application of cloth steeped in either herbal infusion/ decoction. Cooling or warming. Covered on skin with plastic wrap.
Formentation/ compress
What is useful in sprains, strains, skin irritations, infections, muscle cramping/spasms.
Often contain: vulneraries, astringents, rubefacients, circulatory stimulants?

Applying fresh, dried, powdered herb directly to body. Hot or cold.
(Paste of well bruised pants w/ H20? vinegar)
Poultice
What is useful in easing nerve & muscle pains, sprains, broken bones, damaged skin, & draws pus from wounds, boils & ulcers?

Herbs steeped in alcohol (vinegar or glycine), longer shelf life (10 yrs if alcohol), stronger dosage.
Tinctures
Folk, maceration & Percolation method for tinctures?
Folk: Fill jar with herbs, cover with 40% alcohol, store in dark cool place.
Maceration: Same but dried herb in smaller pieces & use 1:5 in 40% ratio
Percolation: Moving solvent through powdered herb material slowly, letting solvent drip through filter into collecting container. Takes 1-2 days, more concentrated end product.
Powders, capsules & tablets
powdered herbs. Can be stirred into food, encapsulated & pressed into tablets.
Vinegars, oxymel & honey?
Vinegars: promote digestion & support liver health.
4% acetic acid & will extract fat soluble constituents.
Oxymel: when honey is added
Honey: when herbs added to honey
saturated solutions of sugar (or honey) in water that can help absorption/therapeutic effect of some medicine?
Syrups
Contain finely powdered herbs rich in mucilage, emulsifier, H20, volatile oils, sweetener.
Treat mucous membranes of mouth, throat, & upper respiratory tract.
Lozenges & Pastilles
deliver herbal constituents right into respiratory tract, contain EO in boiling water.
Steam inhalations
Semi solid prep with oil & beeswax. Act mainly on the surface of the skin.
Salves & lip balms
