What does heparin do?
Interferes with the activation of fibrin and fibrinogen from thrombin that keeps the clots from forming
What does heparin prevent?
clot formation and deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary edema.
Does heparin help break up a clot?
No, it just helps prevent it from forming.
What labs do you monitor for heparin?
PTT
What is PTT cation?
60-70
What is heparin antidote?
Protamine Sulfate
What is important to watch for after administering heparin?
Bleeding

Bleeding, ecchymosis, hematuria, angioedema, osteoporosis, stroke, heparin induced thrombocytopenia
Heparin side effects?
Itching, burning, chills, injection site reaction
Heparin diet considerations
Avoid green leafy vegetables (rich in vit K), caffeine, and excessive alcohol.
Where should you check for bleeding on a patient who is being administered heparin?
Urine, stool, mouth, nose and sin.
Should a patient avoid smoking while on heparin?
YES!
