Useful fact….. the two Houses (lancastrian and Yorkist) fought for many years between each other over the Throne.
These battles were called The War of the Roses and only ended when Henry VII killed Richard III and took over the Throne and married Richard III’s niece

How did Henry VII defeat the two Pretenders?

A

Lambert Simnel - defeated him at the Battle of Stoke in 1487

Perkin Warbreck - Henry monitored him for a number of years and kept defeating him in battles and also by getting rid of his supporters. Perkin Warbreck couldn’t get enough supporters and fled Cornwall when he heard Henry VII was sending his army

A

England was in poor financial state when Henry VII took the Throne.

It was important for Henry to improve The countries finances to keep them powerful (strong army) and the people content (enough food etc)

  • Avoided Wars - a hugely important way Henry saved the country money
  • Royal Revenue went to the Chamber instead of the Exchequer so Henry could keep a close eye on it
  • Trade Treaties - Henry passed laws to say certain goods must be carried on English Ships. This improved Englands ship building business
  • Money Lending - Henry leant money with high interests rates to make more money (like Banks do now)

Why was Law and Order a problem for Henry VII?

A

The War of the Roses had damaged Law and Order in England.

Henry VII needed to make sure there were strong Law and Order rules again to make sure the Country was peaceful and to protect his Throne

Give 3 examples of how Henry VII improved Law and Order in England

A

Henry set up the following to act quickly and efficiently on Law and Order

1) Star Chamber - Henry brought this Court back. It allowed decisions to be made quickly when wealthy people quarrelled. (It was used by Henry VII to investigate plots against him too)
2) Travelling Judges - Judges could move between the main Towns to Try serious Cases and hand out punishments
3) Justices of the Peace (JPs) - less serious cases could be decided by them. They could also licence Beer Houses and set Wages rates

A

To make sure there was a Tudor to inherit the Throne when he died.

If he didn’t have a son the Tudor name would die and another family would take the Throne
