Hemostatic Agents Flashcards
Hemostatic action/Indications
Systemic: prevent systemic clot breakdown to prevent blood loss
Topical: for surface injuries involve so much damage to the small vessels in the area that clotting does not occur and blood is slowly and continually lost
Hemostatic drug names?
Systemic: aminocaproic acid Topical: absorbable gelatin thrombin
Hemostatic contraindications
Systemic: Allergy, acute DIC, lactation
Topical: allergy to bovine products
Hemostatic drug-drug interactions (DDI)
Systemic: Heparin, oral contraceptives or estrogen
Topical: none reported
Hemostatic caution
Systemic: cardiac disease, renal/hepatic dysfunction, pregnancy
Topical: safety in children not established
Hemostatic adverse effects
Systemic: Excessive clotting
CNS: GI weakness, fatigue, malaise, and muscle pain
Topical: infection with sponges
Hemostatic nursing implications
Systemic agent good hx: watch for contraindications/cautions Labs: clotting status, renal/hepatic tests, urinalysis Monitor response & clotting factors Monitor for signs of thrombosis Orient the pt & support Safety measures response to drug Repositioning frequently trouble breathing, chest pain Monitor for adverse effects Monitor Compliance with Regimen
