Hemostasis Flashcards
Petechiae
Small, purplish hemorrhagic spots that appear with thrombocytopenia and many febrile illnesses.
Purpura
Rash in which blood cells leak into skin or mucous membranes. Small pupura=petechiae, large= ecchymosis.
Vasculitis
Blood vessel inflammation
Hematoma
Swelling comprised of mass of extravasated blood confined to a restricted space.
Eccyhymosis
Bruise
Thrombus
Localized clot
Embolism
Obstruction of an artery by an embolus
Embolus
Mobile thrombosis
Primary hemostasis
Processes of platelets attaching to vessel wall via vWF and forming plug.
Secondary hemostasis
Addition of fibrin to plug. Strengthening and maturation of plug.
Adhesion
vWF attracts platelets and adheres them to damaged areas to form initial platelet plug.
Aggregation
Piling on of platelets. Fibrinogen
Thrombocytopenia
Low platelet count
Thrombophilia
Prone to clotting
Thromboplastin
Released by damaged cells. Activates extrinsic pathway of clotting cascade.
