Hemostasis Flashcards
1
Q
What is Hemostasis?
A
- Process which blood vessels are repaired
- Occurs in 4 stages
2
Q
What is the 1st stage of Hemostasis?
A
Vascular Phase: Blood vessel constricts slowing blood flow
3
Q
What is the 2nd stage of Hemostasis?
A
- Platelet Phase: Platelets adhere to endothelial lining.
- Aggregation: Temporary platelet plug forms
4
Q
What are the primary phases of primary hemostasis?
A
- Vascular and Platelet phase
- Bleeding time test evaluates primary hemostasis
5
Q
What is the 3rd stage of Hemostasis?
A
- Coagulation Phase: Cascade of coagulation factors that convert temporary platelet plug to a stable fibrin clot.
6
Q
How does the coagulation cascade work?
A
- Has intrinsic system and extrinsic system
- Systems come together in a common pathway
7
Q
What is Activated Partial Thromboplastin time? (APTT)
A
- Test used to evaluate intrinsic pathway.
- Used to monitor heparin therapy.
8
Q
What is Prothrombin time (PT)?
A
- Test used to evaluate extrinsic pathway.
- Used to monitor coumadin therapy.
9
Q
What is the 4th stage of Hemostasis?
A
- Fibrinolysis: Breakdown and removal of clot.
- When tissue repair starts, plasim enzyme, breaks down fibrin in the clot
- Fibrin degradation products (FDPs) amount is used to monitor rate of fibrinolysis.
