Hemispheric Lateralisation Flashcards
Definition Of hemispheric Lateralisation
Certain mental processes + behaviours are dominated/
controlled by one hemisphere than the other
Examples of lateralisation
Language (W+B) - LHS
Vision = contralateralised + ipsilateral
Split brain studies
Corpus callosum cut in patients with severe epilepsy
Hemispheres cannot communicate
What does the right side of the brain process?
Information from the all left half of the body
What does the left side of the brain process?
Information from the right half of the body
What is contralateral wiring ?
Cross wiring. One side of brain controls opposite half of body
Sperry
Image protected to Ps RVF or LVF
RVF - able to describe what they saw unlike LVF
Due to RVF connected to LHS brain - language centres
Strengths of Sperry
Controlled + standardised - scientific methodology
Allows research that would be ethically wrong
Weaknesses of Sperry
Lacks ecological validity
Only 11 ps - generalisable ???
