Hemispatial neglect and extinction Flashcards

1
Q

how does hemispatial neglect come about?

A

Usually it’s because of a stroke-

Buildup of fatty acids in the main arteries leading up to the brain, taking blood up to the brain. So you get diseased arterial disease carotid artery.

Causes a blockage in the artery and the blood pressure will build up and eventually what we call a thrombus will break off and well travel up the cerebral artery.

Neurons in that particular brain region will be starved of oxygen and will begin to die off and will be replaced by fluid.

Q

neglect/ extinction and attention

A

attention selects internal representations as well as external stimuli.

attention operates in an object-centered frame of reference.

attention also requires suppression of irrelevant information.
