HEM - Exam 1 Flashcards
1
Q
what does a complete blood count (CDC) measure for? (5)
A
hemoglobin, hematocrit, WBCs, RBCs, platelets
2
Q
what is hematocrit? what is the normal range?
A
- ratio of RBC volume to whole blood volume
- 40-50%
3
Q
describe the different RBC indices (4)
A
- MCV: RBC diameter
- MCH: hemoglobin mass
- MCHC: RBC staining intensity or pallor
- RDW: degree of volume variation (variation of size)
4
Q
what is assessed in RBC morphology (4)?
A
size, color, shape, cytoplasmic inclusions
5
Q
what are reticulocytes? what do polychromatophilic RBCs indicate?
A
- young RBCs that contain RNA
- active bone marrow response (to injury)
6
Q
leukopenia vs. leukocytosis
A
- leukopenia = decreased WBCs
- leukocytosis = increased WBCs
7
Q
what are the different types of WBCs (6)?
A
- SEG and band neutrophils: pink cytoplasm
- lymphocytes: small cytoplasm
- monocytes: bigger than RBC, big cytoplasm, vacuoles
- eosinophils: pink granules/cytoplasm
- basophils: purple granules
8
Q
thrombocytosis vs. thrombocytopenia
A
- thrombocytosis = increased platelets
- thrombocytopenia = decreased platelets
9
Q
what is a lot-to-lot comparison?
A
evaluating the quality of a new reagent or kit by comparing it to a previous lot
10
