Heating Boiler Code Flashcards
What is the scale on the dial of a steam boiler gage? What does code say about the travel of the pointer?
Not less than 30 PSI and not more than 60 PSI.
The travel of the pointer from 0 to 30 PSI shall be at least 3”
Size of a steam heating boiler gage glass connection to a water column? To a boiler? Drain size?
Gage glass connections are 1/2” minimum.
Drain size 1/4”
Lowest visible part of the gage glass is ___” above the water level recommended by th manufacturer.
One
Minimum water column connection to a steam heating boiler? WC Drain?
NPS 1.
NPS 3/4
Tell me about the steam connections to the water column on horizontal firetube wrought boilers and cast-iron boilers?
The steam connection must be taken from the top end of a section or top of the steam header. Water connection shall be made on an end section not less than 6” below the bottom connection to the water-gage glass
What pressure controls are required on a steam heating boiler?
- One must have a manual reset that cuts off the fuel supply and prevents it from exceeding 15 PSI.
The other will have a control that cuts off the fuel supply when the operating limit is reached. The operating limit must be lower than the MAWP
How many LWCOs are required on steam heating boilers?
- One with a manual reset is required
Pressure or altitude gage setting range? When do the connections need to be non-ferrous metal?
1 1/2 to 3 1/2 times the safety valve relief pressure setting. Connections are non-ferrous when smaller than NPS 1
How many temperature controls are required on hot water heating and hot water supply boilers? How about pressure controls?
No pressure controls.
One temp control cut the fuel supply when the temp reaches an operating limit less than the max allowable temp.
Another with a manual reset cuts off the fuel at or below the max allowable temp at the boiler outlet
On hot water heating or hot water supply boilers, how many LWCOs are required? Located where?
One with a manual reset which is located above the lowest safe permissible water level. There is no water level to be maintain in a hot water boiler
What may boilers requiring forced circulation use in lieu of LWCOs (could be modular)?
A flow and/or temperature sending device to prevent burner operation at a flow rate inadequate to protect the boiler against overheating at all firing rates. Shuts the burner down and prevents restarting until adequate flow is restored. Independent of all other controls
Safety instruments needed for modular boilers?
Pressure/altitude gages
Thermometer
2 Temp controls
1 LWCO or flow and/or temp sending device
On potable water heaters, what’s the highest water temperature allowed before the fuel cuts out? How many temp controls are required?
210F. 2 Temp controls. One operating control and one high limit actuated combustion control
What do you do when the stamp is missing or illegible?
Apply for another using the REPLACEMENT OF STAMPED DATA FORM NB-136
What form do you use with a new boiler or pressure vessel?
NB-5 boiler or pressure vessel data report
