Heating and cooling solids Flashcards
-Be able to understand what happens to solids when the temperature changes, and why
1
Q
Explain the process of expansion in solids.
A
When solids are heated the particles vibrate faster and move further away from each other, causing the solid to expand.
2
Q
Explain the process of contraction in solids.
A
When solids are cooled, the particles vibrate less allowing the particles to move closer together.
This causes the solid to contract.
3
Q
Explain the process of melting in solids.
A
When a solid gets hot enough, the structured rows of particles break up, allowing the particles to move around. This is called melting and happens at that materials melting point.
