  • uses a form of être or avoir (the imparfait) plus a past participle
  • Example: que Sarkozy avait gagné les élections
  • Most use avoir, but the Vandertramp as well as a few others use être. For these verbs, make the PP agree with the subject.
  • Use the imparfait of etre for the auxiliary for reflexive and reciprocal verbs. Make agreement whenever you would do so for the passé composé
