What is a balanced diet?
A diet thatβs going to contain the right amount of all the different food and energy to keep you healthy
Name food/Nutrient that is needed in a Heathy balanced diet. (7)
- carbohydrates (made of simple sugar like glucose)
- Fat ( made of fatty acids and glycerol)
- proteins ( made of amino acids)
- iron ( mineral)
- vitamin C
- Fibre
- water
Why do you need to eat those food/Nutrient?
- carbohydrates- gives you energy
- Fat - gives you energy
- proteins - growth and repair also can be used as energy
- iron - makes haemoglobin
- vitamin C- prevents scurvy
- Fibre - prevents constipation
- water - prevents dehydration
Where are carbohydrates, fat and proteins stored in the body?
- Carbohydrates- stored in the liver as glycogen or converted to fats
- fat - stored under the skin and around organs as adipose tissue
- protein cannot be stored
What does the diet you eat varies with?
- age
- religion
- medical reasons
- gender
- activity levels
- personal choice (vegetarian)

0.6 times body mass in kg
What does protein need vary according with?
- age
- lactation
- pregnancy
What causes lack of protein?
- some developing countries doesnβt have enough protein due to overpopulation and limited investment in agriculture.
- if they eat more second class proteins( Ines from plants π±) than first class ( Ines from animals) then they may not get all the essential amino acid they need
What condition is caused by a lack of protein?
- Kwashiorkor is a protein deficiency disease.
- it causes to have thin arms and leg and a swollen belly
- weak immune system
- canβt fight infection very well
Why does lack of proteins / balanced diet occur in developed countries?
- some people choose to eat too little due to low self-esteem or poor self-image
- this can cause heart problems and poor health
How do you calculate BMI?
β’Mass in kg divide it by height squared (in m)
- under 18 kg/m2 = underweight
- 18-25kg/m2 = normal
- 25-30kg/m2 = overweight
- over 30kg/m2 = obese
What are obese people more likely to suffer from?
- heart disease
- diabetes
- arthritis
- breast cancer
